Moni Mulepati and Pem Dorjee Sherpa are a dynamic duo whose extraordinary love story and mountaineering achievements inspire people across the globe. In 2005, they became the first couple to exchange wedding vows on the summit of Mt. Everest, defying societal and cultural barriers. Moni, from Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital, and Pem, from a small Himalayan village, met during a mountaineering course. Despite belonging to different castes—Moni, a Hindu, and Pem, a Buddhist—their love triumphed over tradition in one of the world’s most remarkable and secret weddings.
Their shared passion for adventure and service extends far beyond the mountains. As leaders in mountaineering, they organized the Everest expedition for Rotary’s 100-year anniversary, where Moni served as team leader. They are also committed humanitarians, working to uplift remote communities in Nepal. Pem has led efforts to bring essential services like health clinics, clean drinking water, and education to their home village of Chyangba, while Moni has been a strong advocate for women’s empowerment and community development.
Together, they offer inspiring keynote presentations that weave their personal story of love, courage, and resilience with powerful lessons on overcoming adversity and breaking cultural barriers. Their work and achievements exemplify the importance of service, leadership, and community-driven impact. Moni and Pem motivate audiences to not only reach their personal summits but also to create positive change in their communities.
